A recent trip to the Stamford Farmers Market inspired this spicy green vegetable drink, and now I have added it to my collection of recipes for green smoothies.

I’ve often heard of people adding hot peppers or jalapenos to their green smoothie recipes. I love all types hot peppers, but was not sure how it would taste in a green smoothie recipe.

I try to get all ingredients for my recipes for green smoothies from the farmers market. On Wednesdays, I will usually hit up the Irvington farmers market to stock up on ingredients for a few days worth of green smoothies. The Stamford farmers market is on Saturday, and by that time I am usually running out of the ingredients I picked up in Irvington, so the timing is perfect.

When you go to the farmers market, you pick and choose the fruits and vegetables that are in season. This is good because you will not get in a monotonous schedule with when collecting recipes for green smoothies. One week the market might have a bunch of kale, and the next week they might be heavy on spinach.

This week, the Stamford market had a ton of Jamaican spinach, so that was the green base of this new green smoothie; I was very happy with the way this turned out.

Ingredients: (all purchased at the farmers market)

  • 2 Orange tomatoes
  • some green onion
  • 1 whole lemon (peeled)
  • 1 whole Carrot
  • 1 hot chili pepper
  • A bunch of Jamaican spinach (note -I used probably 4x the amount of spinach than pictured above)

Ain’t nothin’ to it but to do it. Add all ingredients to the vitamix with some water and ice and blend to perfection.

One note – I took the seeds out of the hot pepper. The drink has a nick kick to it, but I think adding the seeds, which are typically spicier than the pepper itself, would have been overkill.

I couldn’t make any of these recipes for green smoothies without my Vitamix blender. This blender has changed my life.

Vitamix is the most overpriced, over pushed blender on the market.
I have used my $60 Hamilton Beach for over 15 years making smoothies 3-4 times per week plus hundreds of other mixes. I have not found anything that the Vitamix does that the HB can’t.
I have changed blades several times, but that is routine with any equipment. My blades cost $16. Vitamix – $60+ and last no longer.

Rick – Plain and simply, that is just inaccurate.

I can throw a whole apple into my Vitamix and that thing will be pulverized into a drinkable liquid in under 10 seconds. Your blender will not do that.

I can throw 3 pounds of veggies into my Vitamix, let it blend for 2-3 minutes, and literally have hot soup when I pour the mixture out. The Hamilton Beach would choke 30 seconds in.
